Developer FromSoftware confirmed that the upcoming Elden Ring’s spin-off Nightreign, scheduled for release in 2025, will not feature the iconic in-game messaging system that players have come to know, explaining the removal by 40-minute game sessions.
“The reason we removed the message feature is that in this game, where each session is about 40 minutes long, there is no time to write your message and no time to read messages written by others,” stated Ishizaki in a recent interview, referencing the game’s streamlined structure.
The messaging system in Elden Ring, which allows players to leave cryptic notes and warnings for others, has been a central part of the game’s experience since its launch in 2022.
According to Ishizaki, Nightreign is designed as a “condensed RPG,” with sessions lasting only about 40 minutes each, so the game will focus on moments of intense action, creating an experience where players “gain and lose” quickly but without the traditional downtime. “I think the best part of RPGs is that all of these experiences ultimately come to fruition,” Ishizaki added, emphasizing the game’s focus on providing a tight, fast-paced adventure.
Presumably, this shorter format also means that defeated enemies will not respawn during a playthrough, even after resting at a site of grace. While Nightreign will still feature “ashes” similar to Elden Ring, their usage and function will differ in the new spin-off.
Despite the absence of the messaging feature, Ishizaki is confident that Nightreign will offer players a fresh, thrilling experience. “It will provide a sense of accomplishment and joy that is different from previous titles,” he said. “We are very excited for players to try it.”
A network test for Elden Ring: Nightreign is scheduled for February 2025, with registration beginning on January 10th. Meanwhile, its predecessor, Elden Ring, had achieved global sales of 28.6 million units, according to the latest stats.
