Capcom’s Resident Evil 4 Remake has officially become the fastest-selling game in the history of the survival horror series, reaching over nine million copies sold since its launch in March 2023.
The achievement was announced by Capcom on Jan. 6, 2025, with a grateful tweet addressed to nine million-plus players wishing them a Happy New Year.
Resident Evil’s remake of the fourth part outpaced its predecessors significantly. By their eighth quarter post-launch, Resident Evil Village, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, and Resident Evil 3 Remake had sold 500,000, 400,000, and 300,000 units, respectively, during the same period. In comparison, Resident Evil 4 added over one million units sold in its most recent quarter alone.
With updated graphics, refined gameplay mechanics, and new content, Resident Evil 4 Remake has achieved an Overwhelmingly Positive review status on Steam, amassing over 100,000 user reviews. Additionally, its December 2023 releases on PS VR2 and iOS have further expanded the game’s reach, bringing it to new audiences.
The success of Resident Evil 4 Remake reflects the continued strength of Capcom’s approach to remaking classic titles, which began with 2019’s Resident Evil 2 Remake. As of December 2024, Resident Evil 2 has sold 7.8 million copies, and Village stands at 7.9 million units. Meanwhile, Capcom confirmed in July 2024 that a new installment in the franchise is in development.
The milestone arrives amid other new events in the Resident Evil universe. A documentary titled George A. Romero’s Resident Evil, exploring the late filmmaker’s unrealized adaptation of the game series, recently secured distribution rights in the US and Canada.
