Undertale beats its concurrent player record on Steam, a decade after the original release in 2015, keeping an Overwhelmingly Positive rating of 229,917 as of the time of writing.

Due to Steam’s current Spring Sale that started on March 16 and will run until March 20, 2025, indie RPG from Toby Fox has seen a surge in new players, setting a new all-time peak of 11,071 concurrent users. The previous record of 10,473 was set just months after the game’s 2015 launch.

Fox shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), celebrating the milestone: “Since going on sale on Steam for only $1, Undertale reached a new peak of concurrent players for the first time since 2015.”

Undertale is a role-playing video game with a top-down perspective and quirky humor. The game is set in an Underground world filled with monsters, where you, as the player, control a child who has fallen into this world. The game allows users to approach combat in two distinct ways: fighting or sparing. In combat, players control the character during the “fight” phase and must dodge bullets in a bullet-hell-style mini-game. However, rather than always attacking, users can choose to act in different ways, such as talking to or complimenting the monsters. If gamers choose to spare them, they can avoid combat entirely and instead focus on building relationships with the characters.

Besides multiple nominations, Undertale won four awards, including the Award for Excellence at the Japan Game Awards on Sept. 23, 2018. The game is available on PC (Windows, macOS, Linux) via Steam and GOG, PlayStation 4|5, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.

It is worth noting that Undertale has a follow-up also developed by Fox, a game called Deltarune. In the game, the player controls a human teenager, Kris, who is destined to save the world together with Susie, a monster, and Ralsei, a prince from the Dark World.

By the end of 2015, according to a preliminary report by Steam Spy, Undertale was one of the best-selling games on Steam, with 530,343 copies sold. As of August 2024, Undertale has sold approximately 6.3 million copies just on Steam, while the total sales numbers remain unclear.
