- Overwatch League was shut down in 2024.
- Overwatch Esports is still alive despite the shut down.
- The esport hit a peak viewership of 147,516 viewers thus far in 2025.
Despite the Overwatch League shutting down in 2024, Overwatch esports remains active, reaching a peak of 147,516 viewers in 2025. According to Esports Charts, this milestone was set during Crazy Raccoon Cup Five, a tournament held on January 13, 2025.
Considering the year is still fresh, the esport still has nine months left to surpass this number. Overwatch esports has plenty of tournaments planned throughout 2025, with the World Finals for the Overwatch Championship Series occurring in November. At this point in time, playoffs are underway, concluding on March 9.
Overwatch Esports’ peak viewership figure for 2025 actually surpassed the peak concurrent viewership for 2021, a year where Overwatch’s esport admittedly struggled with their formatting. Though Overwatch Esports is undeniably still alive and kicking, the 147,516 figure for 2025 pales in comparison to the esports’ lifetime peak of 437,000 concurrent viewers – which was achieved in 2018.
The game added a brand new perk system, which revamped gameplay by allowing customizable playstyles. This change brought back a sizable chunk of the game’s player base, as it helped distinguish Overwatch 2 from Marvel Rivals – a Netease developed title that directly rivals Overwatch 2.
