PlayStation 3 Receives Software Update Eight Years After Production Ended

Sony rolled out a new system software update, version 4.92, for the PlayStation 3 on March 5, 2025, despite the end of its production almost eight years ago following an 11-year run after the console’s initial release in November 2006.
The update introduces key enhancements, including a renewed encryption key for Blu-ray playback and general improvements to the system’s usability and security features. To install the update, users need at least 200 MB of free space on their PS3 hard disk drive or a compatible removable media storage.
It is worth noting that the previous PS3 system software update 4.91 was released on Feb. 27, 2024.
The Sony PlayStation 3 sold approximately 87.4 million units worldwide during its lifecycle. In due time, the console was well-regarded for its multimedia capabilities, including Blu-ray support.
