Key points

  1. Pokémon Z-A has real-time combat, which is different from the series’ conventional turn-based gameplay loop.
  2. Trainers can position themselves alongside their Pokémon to avoid getting hit.
  3. Pokémon will unleash their moves when their trainers command them to.

In a teaser presented by the official Pokémon Twitter page, Nintendo revealed that Pokémon Z-A will have real time combat. This means the traditional turn based combat will not be present — instead, players can command their Pokémon to “unleash their moves” on demand.

The teaser showcases Totodile dodging Tepig’s rollout, a dodge influenced by the trainer’s initial movement. Totodile appears to be following alongside the trainer, which allows it to dodge the attack. This mechanic appears to rely heavily on positioning – rewarding smart positioning during a fight.

The trainer follows up the dodge by commanding Totodile to use water gun. Totodile takes a brief moment to charge up the attack, then unleashes a spray of water. Animation charge up times alongside their speed at which they are unleashed will likely heavily dictate the flow of battle.

It is unclear whether the player can take damage, as no footage of the mechanic was showcased. But considering the mechanic was a key mechanic in Legends Arceus, requiring dodge rolls to avoid attacks, the mechanic is expected to make a return.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A trailer was revealed during Pokémon Presents, an event that aired on February 27, 2025. The presentation also revealed Pokémon Champions, a battle focused title releasing on the Nintendo Switch and mobile devices.
