- Warner Bros. Games is shutting down three studios.
- Shuttered studios created F.E.A.R., Shadow of War, MultiVersus and other well-known titles.
- Monolith’s Wonder Woman game is canceled.
Warner Bros. Games is shutting down three studios—Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and WB Games San Diego—and canceling all projects in development, including the Wonder Woman game. The publisher informed employees of the cuts on Tuesday.
Monolith Productions, best known for Aliens Versus Predator 2, F.E.A.R., Condemned and more recently Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War games, had been working on Wonder Woman, a title announced in 2021. Player First Games developed MultiVersus, a platform fighter that was recently pulled from live service. WB Games San Diego was working on an unannounced AAA free-to-play title.
The reason for shutting down the three studios was a “disappointing 2024,” according to Warner Bros. Games CEO JB Perrette. The company is planning to focus on four core franchises—Harry Potter/Hogwarts Legacy, Mortal Kombat, DC (primarily Batman), and Game of Thrones—while cutting projects that no longer “align with its strategic goals”. As part of this shift, the long-in-development Wonder Woman game has been canceled. Some employees may be reassigned, though details remain unclear.
The closures follow a series of underwhelming releases, including Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, MultiVersus, and Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions. Perrette acknowledged the company’s struggles with “product-market fit and quality,” emphasizing that Warner Bros. Games must regain credibility “one high-quality game release at a time.” The company is also aiming to expand its mobile gaming revenue as part of the restructuring.
The shake-up comes just weeks after the January departure of David Haddad, who led Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment for over a decade.
