Bungie Turns a Destiny 2 Bug into a Feature

|
- Bungie has decided to keep the Destiny 2 bug that unlocked Exotic Glaives for all classes.
- The developer’s team states that they will monitor the change to ensure balance.
- It is not the first time for Bungie to allow users to experiment with bugs.
A bug that unlocked class-specific Exotic Glaives for all players in Destiny 2 officially stays in the game, as Bungie considers it an accidental feature.
The bug was discovered shortly after the release of the Heresy update earlier in February 2025. Instead of quickly fixing it, Bungie embraced the unintended change, allowing players to experiment with new opportunities.
Previously, the Exotic Glaives, called Edge of Intent, Edge of Concurrence, and Edge of Action, were restricted to specific classes. Warlocks, Hunters, and Titans. But with the recent update, a bug removed these class locks, allowing all players to wield the Glaives, as well as some older class-locked swords. The bug appearance was followed by a wave of experimentation, with players testing out new loadouts and combinations.

Bungie explained that while the bug wasn’t intentional, it had been the result of shifting to a new backend system. “On the backend, we shifted to a new way of creating weapons and rewards to help streamline some of the development process,” stated the company on its blog. “While moving into this new paradigm, class lockouts for the Exotic Glaives and a handful of Swords were mistakenly removed.”
Despite initial concerns about breaking the game’s class-based identity, Bungie decided to let the bug remain as part of Destiny 2: “After some discussions between team members, we’ve arrived at a new decision: we’re going to let this ride. A fun example of a bug becoming a feature”.
The team has also made it clear that while it is excited to see new build-crafting possibilities emerge, they’ll continue to monitor how these Glaives are used across different classes. Bungie reiterated that while it’s okay to embrace the bug for now, it still wants each Glaive to feel most powerful when used by the class they were originally designed for.
It is worth notion that this case is not the first time when Bungie has embraced bugs turning them into features for a while:
- The Whisper of the Worm’s special ammo bug was one of them. Initially, the Whisper of the Worm exotic sniper rifle had a bug where players could farm its special ammo more efficiently than intended. Bungie decided to leave the bug in place for a while, allowing players to continue using it in that manner.
- There also was a bug with the Divinity exotic trace rifle that made it incredibly easy to keep the debuff applied on enemies, making it more powerful. Bungie chose not to patch it immediately and let players enjoy the extra power for a while before they fixed it.
- During some of the seasonal events, there have been bugs related to Ascendant Shards or other materials where they could be farmed much more efficiently than intended.
