U.S. video game industry sales fell 15% year-over-year to $4.5 billion in January 2025, impacted by a shorter four-week tracking period compared to January 2024’s five weeks. Despite the drop, sales remained 0.3% higher than January 2023’s $4.5 billion.
The data comes from Mat Piscatella, Executive Director and Video Game Industry Analyst at Circana, who shared the latest estimates on his social media.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 became the best-selling game in the US in January 2025. Shooter continues topping the charts as it was also the number one seller for all of 2024.
Piscatella also stated that besides the fact that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 was January’s best-selling video game it was also ranking 1st on PlayStation while placing at 2nd on Xbox. According to Circana’s Player Engagement Tracker, Call of Duty HQ ranked 1st in total MAU on Xbox Series consoles and 2nd on PS5.
The whole list of most popular games in January 2025 according to Circana’s estimates:
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
- Madden NFL 25
- Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth
- EA Sports FC 25

Piscatella’s platform-specific charts showed a few notable trends where Black Ops 6 led the charge on PlayStation, while Madden NFL 25 dominated Xbox sales. On the Nintendo Switch, however, Donkey Kong Country Returns claimed the top spot, offering a different flavor compared to the more mainstream entries in the top charts.
Despite the strong performance of Call of Duty and other franchises, the overall industry saw a decline in spending, down 15% year-over-year. Circana’s Mat Piscatella pointed out that this drop can be partly attributed to the shorter four-week tracking period for January 2025 compared to the five-week period in 2024.
