Key points
- Teammates is a first-person shooter where players use voice commands to direct Jasper and two other NPC squad members.
- Jaspar can highlight enemies, provide lore, alter game settings, and pause the game based on natural voice instructions.
- Pablo and Sofia, the other NPC squad members, can also be voice-directed.
Teammates is Ubisoft’s latest generative AI research project; the game plays as a first-person shooter where gamers can use voice commands to direct in-game NPCs. The main AI tool is Jaspar, serving as an in-game voice assistant with various functionalities, including highlighting enemies, altering game settings, and pausing the game. The playable project also features two AI-controlled squad members: Pablo and Sofia; these characters can also be voice-directed.
The team responsible for the project is attempting to test the potential and limits of player interactions through natural speech, while exploring how generative AI can be used to enhance immersion and test unique interactions that would not be possible without the technology.
“We hope players will feel like they’re shaping the story themselves, not just following it. When I talk to [my AI squad mate] Sofia, she reacts to what I tell her, and it changes my experience,” Narrative Director Virignie Mosser explained.
Despite being playable, this project is first and foremost an experimental research project. In the playthrough, the players must recover the final memories of those who were sent in previously to discover their fates while fending off squads of enemies along their path.
