Key points
- A Korean website has claimed that Sony’s Horizon franchise has already sold 40 million copies.
- The last officially reported number was 38 million from a legal document.
- NCSoft is currently developing an MMORPG called Horizon Steel Frontiers set in the Horizon franchise.
According to Nate, a Korean website, Sony’s Horizon franchise has already sold 40 million copies, making it one of Sony’s top-selling franchises. The number came from an article reporting on the new MMORPG that NCSoft is developing, which is also set in the Horizon setting.
However, Sony hasn’t confirmed the official number of sold copies yet. The last time it did was in a report back in July, where the company said that it had sold 38 million copies in a lawsuit against Tencent.
The Horizon franchise started when Horizon Zero Dawn was released back in 2017 for the PlayStation 4, followed by a direct sequel in 2022. Horizon Call of the Mountain was the third installment, which was a launch title for the PlayStation VR2, but it isn’t directly related to the two other installments.
Currently, NCSoft is developing an MMORPG called Horizon Steel Frontiers that was announced at South Korea’s premier game conference, G-Star 2025. The developers did not announce a release window for the title.
It was also reported that Guerrilla Games, the developers behind the franchise, is creating a multiplayer title also in the Horizon franchise that’s unrelated to Horizon Steel Frontiers.
