Sony’s expectations for Bungie fall short, with ‘impairment losses’ on Destiny 2 assets

Bungie didn’t reach Sony’s expectations following the $3.6 billion acquisition, according to the Q2 FY2025 Consolidated Financial Results for the three months ended Sept. 30, 2025, published by Sony Group Corporation on Nov. 11, 2025.

According to the report, Sony recorded impairment losses against a portion of Bungie’s intangible and other assets in connection with its flagship title Destiny 2, amounting to 31.5 billion yen, which is approximately 204 million dollars as of the time of writing.

“Regarding Destiny 2, partially due to the changes in the competitive environment, the level of sales and user engagement have not reached the expectations we had at the time of the acquisition of Bungie. While we will continue to make improvements, we have downwardly revised the business projection for the time being and recorded an impairment loss against a portion of the assets at Bungie,” explained Sony Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Lin Tao during an investor-related financial call.

Destiny 2 is a free-to-play online first-person shooter developed by Bungie. The game was initially released as a pay-to-play title for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on Sept. 6, 2017, and for Windows PC on Oct. 24, 2017.

Simultaneously with the launch of the Shadowkeep DLC, the sequel to 2014’s Destiny turned free-to-play on Oct. 1, 2019, subtitled New Light.

The game even got ported to Google’s Stadia cloud gaming service on Nov. 19, 2019, and then received versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on Dec. 8, 2020. Destiny 2 was originally published by Activision until, on Dec. 31, 2018, Bungie acquired the publishing rights to the franchise.

Set in a mythic sci-fi universe, Destiny 2 features a multiplayer with elements of role-playing games and, like its predecessor, is divided into PvE and PvP environments.

Between 2017 and 2019, Destiny 2 earned six industry awards from different acclaimed ceremonies.

The latest Destiny 2 DLC titled The Edge of Fate, launched on July 15, 2025 and became the tenth major expansion following Curse of Osiris, Warmind, Forsaken, Shadowkeep, Beyond Light, The Witch Queen, Lightfall and The Final Shape. It launched with the lowest number of online concurrent players on Steam compared to previous DLCs as was reported by Gaming.News.

As of the time of writing, Destiny 2’s player count is at its all-time low of about 171,000 daily online players (across all platforms), according to popularity.report.

Destiny 2 Renegades DLC is planned to launch in December 2025, with Shattered Cycle and The Alchemist expansions slated for release in summer and winter 2026, respectively.
