Rockstar will probably return to the Red Dead series with a new installment, declared Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser in a recent episode of Lex Fridman’s podcast, which was posted on Oct. 31, 2025.

“I think probably it would be in some ways sadder [than with GTA] if someone continued on Red Dead, because it was a cohesive two-game arc. That might be more sad to hear someone working on that. But again, that will probably happen too. I don’t own the IP. That was part of the deal. It’s a privilege to work on stuff, but you don’t necessarily own it.” said Houser.

Houser was a lead writer on Red Dead Redemption 2, the third entry in the Red Dead series and a prequel to 2010’s Red Dead Redemption.

Developed and published by Rockstar Games Red Dead Redemption 2 was initially released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on Oct. 26, 2018, then received a version for Windows PC on Nov. 5, 2019, and even was ported to Google Stadia on Nov. 19, 2019. As of the time of writing, the game still lacks versions for the current ninth generation of consoles, which includes PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, although rumors about a next-gen update for Red Dead Redemption 2 and a version of the game for the Nintendo Switch 2 popped up at the beginning of Summer 2025.
