Viktor Antonov, the acclaimed art director behind the distinctive worlds of Half-Life 2 and Dishonored, has passed away at the age of 52. The news surfaced through a screenshot of an Instagram Story attributed to Half-Life lead writer Marc Laidlaw. Gaming.News reached out to a trusted source from Eschatology Entertainment, the company Antonov co-founded, who confirmed his passing. No further details regarding the cause or circumstances of his death are known at this time.

A screenshot of Laidlaw’s Instagram story began circulating on social media on Feb. 15. At press time, due to the nature of Instagram Stories that disappear after 24 hours, the post is no longer available. It was originally posted here. Laidlaw’s message described Antonov as a “visionary” who was “brilliant and original” and “made everything better.”

The post, which went viral on X/Twitter and Reddit, stated that Laidlaw had waited for confirmation before sharing the news but did not have further details.

Antonov was instrumental in shaping the look and feel of some of gaming’s most visually striking worlds. As the art director for Half-Life 2, he was responsible for the design of City 17, blending brutalist architecture with dystopian science fiction. He later became the visual design director for Dishonored (2012), where his work on the industrial, steampunk-inspired city of Dunwall earned widespread acclaim.

His influence extended beyond these franchises, with contributions to Bethesda, id Software, Arkane Studios, and other game developers throughout his career. He served as an additional art director for Wolfenstein: The New Order and consulted on the development of DOOM (2016), Fallout 4, Prey (2017), and Dishonored 2. Most recently, Antonov co-founded Eschatology Entertainment, a new game development studio, in 2022.
