Crytek Lays Off 15% of Workforce and Puts Crysis 4 on Hold Indefinitely

Crytek has announced restructuring resulting in a 15% reduction of its workforce. The German studio has also confirmed that Crysis 4 development is now on hold, with no timeline provided for its potential revival.

Stuff redaction will affect approximately 60 employees across the company’s development and shared services teams. 

In a statement shared on social media, the studio behind the Crysis series explained the layoffs were a direct response to the ongoing financial challenges affecting the gaming industry. Crytek cited “complex, unfavorable market dynamics” that have put pressure on developers globally, leading to difficult decisions.

“This has not been an easy decision to make, as we deeply appreciate the hard work of our talented teams,” says the statement.

The studio, which currently employs around 400 people, has been attempting to redirect resources to its successful Hunt: Showdown series with 60,124 concurrent players on Aug. 15, 2024, in hopes of sustaining its operations. However, despite these efforts, Crytek has determined that significant staff reductions are necessary to ensure long-term stability.

Additionally, the company confirmed that its in-house game engine, CRYENGINE, will continue to be a core focus moving forward.
