- The president of Capcom also commented on the release of the Nintendo Switch 2.
In an interview with Nikkei Gaming via Google Translate, Capcom president Haruhiro Tsujimoto revealed that he thinks the price of the PlayStation 5 is a barrier for people to play Monster Hunter Wilds, which caused its sales to drop after its magnificent start.
The interview centered around the performance of Monster Hunter Wilds, which gave Capcom an unprecedented 10 million units sold in a single month. Tsujimoto said that while Capcom may not have been very conscious of initial sales, since Dragon’s Dogma 2’s release in 2024, they have been making efforts to improve it.
While the initial sales of Monster Hunter Wilds have been phenomenal, its Q1 financial results revealed that the game has only sold 477,000 units. Tsujimoto said in the interview that the company found that there is something called a “PS5 barrier.”
This so-called barrier is from a financial standpoint, as he mentioned that the PlayStation 5 costs around 80,000 Japanese yen ($538), and factoring in the cost of the game will shoot the initial payment to 100,000 yen ($673), which is an amount of money that can’t be easily reached, especially for younger fans.
Due to this, Capcom plans to hold sales in the future, but Tsujimoto clarified that they are still formulating a strategy to boost sales throughout the year.
Tsujimoto also showed interest in the Nintendo Switch 2, saying that the response was better than the company had expected. It’s unclear whether this interest might lead to Monster Hunter Wilds being ported to the device, but it might seem unlikely due to the game’s graphical requirements.
