Hollow Knight: Silksong’s Historic Release Continues Prompting Indie Studios to Postpone Titles

Key points
- Numerous indie games continue to be postponed as a result of avoiding direct competition with Hollow Knight: Silksong.
- Babysteps postponed its release date from Sept. 8 to Sept. 23 as a direct result of Hollow Knight: Silksong’s highly anticipated debut.
-
Little Witch in the Woods also delayed its release due to Silksong.
Hollow Knight: Silksong’s upcoming Sept. 4 release date is prompting even more indie game studios to delay their own title debuts. Baby Steps has been postponed from its initial Sept. 8 release to Sept. 23, almost two weeks after its initially scheduled debut. The developers revealed a trailer announcing the postponement, directly referencing Hollow Knight: Silksong as the cause of the delay.
Other delayed titles include Demonschool, Faeland, Stomp of the Sword of Miracles, and Little Witch in the Woods.
Demonschool was originally scheduled for a Sept. 3 release date, but was moved to Nov. 19. Faeland, on the other hand, has no new release date; its early access period was supposed to conclude on Sept 3. Stomp of the Sword of Miracles had initially planned to release a playable demo on Aug. 29, with a Kickstarter campaign beginning on Sept. 12.
“Trying to market an indie game is already really, really hard. […] In the case of Silksong, however, I feel like a little krill trying to not get eaten by a blue whale,” the development team for Stomp Sword of Miracles shared on social media, justifying the delay in demo release.
Little Witch in the Woods slightly delayed its release date from Sept 4, which would have directly competed with Hollow Knight: Silksong, to Sept. 15.
“Silksong is a game we look up to with awe as developers, and eagerly anticipate as players. Given its immense influence, we fear that launching Little Witch in the Woods on the same day would not only dishearten our dedicated team but also disappoint our devoted audience,” the team communicated on Aug. 26, 2025.
As previously reported, Aeterna Lucis was postponed until 2026, and Panik Arcade was postponed from Sept. 3 to Sept. 26.
Hollow Knight: Silksong is being created by Team Cherry, an indie game studio consisting of only three main developers. The title sold over 15 million copies, and the recent release date reveal for the title prompted a new peak concurrent player count of the game’s predecessor on Steam, indicating immense anticipation for the sequel. Silksong will reportedly not have early review copies prior to launch.
