Sword of the Sea was released worldwide for Windows PC and PlayStation 5 on Aug. 19, 2025.
The title joined the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog on day one and became available for members of the Extra and Premium subscription plans.
The game allows players to assume control over the Wraith, who explores an abandoned, desolate world and brings life back to it. The Wraith explores the world on a gliding hoversword, which acts like a snowboard, skateboard and hoverboard all in one.
During the exploration journey, the Wraith collects Ocean Seeds, which bring back water to the desert wasteland after interacting with them. Returning the ocean to the world provides new opportunities for surfing, and the returning marine life opens up paths for exploration. While the gameplay is mostly about surfing the landscape using the hoversword and keeping momentum, at certain points, players will need to battle leviathans.
Sword of the Sea was developed and published by Giant Squid, the studio behind 2016’s Abzû and 2020’s The Pathless. The game was directed by Matt Nava, who worked as the art director of 2012’s Journey, a gliding game also set in a desert.
