A recent interview with 4Gamer revealed that Tekken’s producer, Katsuhiro Harada, tried adding Pac-Man into the first game and was scolded by IP’s creator, Toru Iwatani, via Automaton Media’s translation.
Harada added that Pac-Man’s Tekken model was supposed to be a person with a yellow head and a muscular body, quite far away from the mascot’s yellow and circular model. Iwatani’s rejection of the proposal was accompanied by his presenting Harada with a thick document that contained guidelines for featuring Pac-Man in other works. Harada even mentioned that he was confident it would pass.
Tekken has a history of adding mascot characters into the game. Take Tekken 3, for example, which added Gon, a small dinosaur. What not a lot of people know is that Gon is actually from a manga series of the same name, making it the first mascot to join the franchise.
Quite recently, Tekken 8 has collaborated with Pac-Man, even adding a new stage full of arcade effects. A Pac-Man head was also added, which might be the closest thing players may get from Harada’s initial proposal.
