On Aug. 7, 2025, Sony held a conference regarding its recent financial reports, during which the media could ask questions about the company’s future. It was here that Sony’s senior vice president, Sadahiko Hayakawa, revealed that the company is moving away from its hardware-centric business model, as translated by Genki.
To clarify, Sony will continue producing PlayStation consoles. The company will just focus more on the platform business model. Hayakawa did not explain what platform business means in this context, but it’s safe to assume that it has something to do with PlayStation Network and PlayStation Plus.
Additionally, Hayakawa also mentioned that the company is overall shifting to “creation.” This might mean that they plan on investing more toward creating new IPs and creating more hardware used for creating things such as digital cameras, according to Genki.
At the same conference, Sony chief financial officer Lin Tao revealed that Bungie is becoming a part of PlayStation Studios. Sony bought Bungie back in 2022 as an independent studio; however, it seems that the company has changed its tone and is looking to integrate the studio into its portfolio fully.
Recently, Bungie has been under fire for plagiarism accusations regarding its upcoming game, Marathon. Players have spotted the art of N2 plastered across the game, which led to backlash from the community. This led to the game being indefinitely delayed.
