Key points
- Japan’s largest speedrunning event, RTA in Japan, will not feature any Nintendo games.
- The organizers revealed that they were contacted by Nintendo itself regarding permissions.
- RTA in Japan is scheduled to run from Aug. 9 to 15.
On Aug. 4, 2025, RTA in Japan, the biggest speedrunning event in Japan, came clean with the reason why Nintendo games are absent from the event. According to the organizers, Nintendo deemed it necessary for them to submit a request for each of its games that will be featured at the event.
The note came to them on June 13, 2025, when Nintendo pointed out that the use of its games required permission, and prior events where its games were used were classified as unauthorized use.
Nintendo games are usually the highlight of these kinds of events due to games like Super Mario 64, one of the most popular games that is currently being speedrun by a large community, being one of the staples in events such as RTA in Japan.
The organizers mentioned that they still want to be able to feature Nintendo games at their events in the future and have started to work with Nintendo regarding permissions. Unfortunately, the summer event, as previously announced, will not have them, as the organizers failed to receive permission.
Automaton Media has pointed out that the complication might’ve been from RTA in Japan becoming a legal entity in 2020, despite it being a non-profit organization. Every donation made in the stream will go to charity. RTA in Japan is scheduled to run from Aug. 9 to 15.
