GOG’s FreedomToBuy.Games initiative offered 13 free NSFW titles to increase awareness of censorship, which has reportedly begun deciding for consumers which games they can or cannot buy. This campaign began after Itch.io and Steam were pressured to remove certain adult content. The initiative gained 1 million supporters within the first 24 hours of its beginning.
As of writing, the giveaway has concluded; the campaign lasted for 48 hours and offered the following titles for free:
- POSTAL 2
- Agony + Agony UNRATED
- Leap of Love
- Being a DIK – Season 1
- Leap of Faith
- House Party
- HuniePop
- Lust Theory
- Treasure of Nadia
- Summer’s Gone – Season 1
- Fetish Locator Week One
- Sapphire Safari
- Helping the Hotties
“For 48 hours, these games are free, because if a game is legal, you should be free to buy it,” FreedomToBuy.Games wrote on its website.
The X post promoting the giveaway amassed over 70 thousand likes and gained over 4 million views. Within the X post, users continue calls to action to protest payment providers, which were used by the Collective Shout Campaign to strongarm both Itch.io and Steam to remove various NSFW titles.
While Itch.io had previously removed all of its NSFW titles from its catalog, Steam only removed specific titles, later implementing a vague policy reportedly catered towards appeasing payment providers. Itch.io began reindexing its free adult content on July 31. The Collective Shout Campaign had not explicitly demanded that Itch.io remove all NSFW content; instead, the campaign had demanded that the gaming platform remove games that host rape, incest, and child sexual abuse-themed games.
