Roblox to Introduce New Safety Feature Using AI to Guess Children’s Age

|
- Roblox introduced a new way for children to confirm their age called Age Estimation.
- An AI will look at the child’s recorded video selfie and estimate their age.
- This kind of feature might introduce privacy issues.
On July 17, 2025, Roblox published a press release talking about the platform’s safety features for children. In it, Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman talks about the introduction of Trusted Connections and Age Estimation technology.
Trusted Connections allow players 13 and over to add others as “Trusted Connections.” By doing so, they will be able to party voice and text chat with no filters, essentially having more freedom to express themselves.
However, before being able to do this, players will have to go through Roblox’s Age Estimation. To do this, they will need to record a video selfie and submit it. An AI will guess the person’s age from the submitted video and make a judgment call whether to allow them to use the system. This option exists alongside the current one already implemented, which is confirmation through ID.
The company did not talk about how the video essay is going to be stored or if it will be at all. This might raise concerns regarding privacy issues, especially since the platform’s target audience are teens and children.
Aside from this, the company has also introduced more ways for parents to monitor their children’s behavior on the platform. Trusted Connections and Connection Insights are going to be added to the parental controls, along with screen-time insights.
