Square Enix is currently developing a remake of Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, targeting release in fiscal year 2027, which begins on March 31, 2026, and runs until March 31, 2027, according to a report from MP1ST dated July 12, 2025.

The author of the report, under the nickname Alvaro eXtas1s, said that the information comes from the game developer’s internal documents, which label the upcoming title as a remake, indicating a reimagining of the game rather than a simple graphical upgrade, which Square Enix usually marks as an HD remake.

The story of the game follows the protagonist, who embarks on a journey to the past with his friend in order to find out why all the continents on the planet vanished, leaving only one small island.

Dragon Quest VII is well known for its huge size, as even without the side quests, the game’s main campaign can take over 100 hours to complete.

The game uses a class system for learning abilities, similar to the one introduced in Dragon Quest VI, including such classes as Hero, Warrior, Fighter, Cleric, Mage, Bard, Dancer, Jester, Thief, Idol, Pirate, Ranger, Gladiator, Paladin, Summoner and God Hand (Champion in the localized 3DS version). Some of these can be unlocked only by mastering other classes. The title also features monster classes, which are unlockable by using the appropriate monster heart or by mastering prerequisite monster classes.

Initially developed by Heartbeat and ArtePiazza and published by Enix, Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past was released for PlayStation in Japan on Aug. 26, 2000, and in North America on Nov. 1, 2001, under the title Dragon Warrior VII.

Dragon Quest VII later received a Nintendo 3DS port in Japan on Feb. 7, 2013. Three years later, the game was launched in North America and Europe on Sept. 16, 2016, and in Australia on Sept. 17, 2016, under the name Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past. A mobile version for Android and iOS was released in Japan on Sept. 17, 2015.

The game sold approximately 4 million copies worldwide on PlayStation and over 1 million on Nintendo 3DS.
