System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster finally reached consoles on July 10, 2025, and became playable on PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch two weeks after its release for Windows PC on June 26, 2025.

As of the time of writing, the remaster has a “Very Positive” rating on Steam with 765 reviews, while 1999’s original System Shock 2 also has a “Very Positive” rating with 6,139 reviews.

The game is set 42 years after the events of the first System Shock, as players assume the control of a soldier bolstered with cybernetic implants who awakens from cryo-sleep and sets out to unravel the mystery of the derelict starship Von Braun, fighting against the returning antagonist of the initial title, Shodan, and her army.

Console ports came two weeks after the PC release, as the game’s developer experienced issues with the certification process and some unspecified multiplayer-specific problems.

System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster was developed and published by Nightdive Studios. It is worth noting that the original System Shock 2, which is available on modern operating systems including Windows, macOS and Linux, is an updated version of the game released by Nightdive Studios in 2013 after they acquired the rights to the franchise.

The original System Shock 2 received over a dozen awards, including seven “Game of the Year” recognitions. The title revolutionized storytelling in first-person games and is seen as the spiritual predecessor to BioShock, BioShock Infinite and Prey.

In 2015, OtherSide Entertainment announced that it had acquired the rights from Nightdive Studios to produce the third part of the series, System Shock 3, but in 2020 the rights were transferred to Tencent.
