Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson has hinted at the possibility of a sequel for Apex Legends, a 2019 battle royale-hero shooter set in the same universe as the Titanfall series.

During the company’s latest earnings call, Wilson acknowledged that the current trajectory of the live-service shooter has not aligned with EA’s expectations but teased that a “meaningful update” is in the works.

While Apex Legends has been a success initially since its launch, Wilson admitted that the game has faced challenges in recent years. “It’s one of the great new launches in our industry over the last decade,” Wilson said. “However, it has not been headed in the direction we have wanted for some time.” To remedy this, EA is focusing on a more significant update to revitalize the franchise, though Wilson clarified that it would not coincide with the release of the upcoming Battlefield title, which is expected before April 2026.

Despite the company’s ongoing support for Apex Legends, including anti-cheat measures and new content, the larger goal seems to be setting the stage for a more substantial evolution of the franchise. “We do believe that there should be a more major update that will probably happen after a Battlefield launch just in terms of timing, and the team is diligently working through what that would be,” said Wilson.

“And then longer term, our expectation is that we’ll continue to expand what this franchise is and how we support a core community of highly competitive players and new communities that want to come and experience all the greatness that Apex has to offer.” The company’s aim according to EA CEO is for Apex to be a franchise that lasts for decades, and for that, an “even bigger, more meaningful update” would be required – “an Apex 2.0, if you will”.

Despite the fact that Wilson outlined during EA’s Q4 2024 earnings call the nearest company’s plans, he never mentioned the Titanfall series even though it shares the same fiction universe with Apex Legends and hasn’t seen new titles since the launch of Titanfall 2 in 2016.

As of May 2024, Apex Legends has generated over $3.4 billion in revenue since its release in 2019, primarily derived from in-game purchases, including cosmetic items and battle passes.
