Destiny 2’s Latest Expansion Suffered From SAG-AFTRA Strike, Has Voiceless Dialogue

- Due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, Destiny 2’s latest expansion will have voiceless dialogue.
- It’s currently unsure which characters will have incomplete voiced dialogue.
- The strike started on July 25, 2024.
Destiny 2’s latest expansion will feature voiceless dialogue due to the SAG-AFTRA strike that started last year.
Heresy is Destiny 2’s latest expansion and is the final entry to the game’s Light and Darkness Saga, but something crucial that might affect the player’s immersion is missing. According to a blog post written by Bungie on January 31, the expansion will contain events where there will be no voice acting.
“Due to the on-going SAG-AFTRA strike, you may notice certain voice lines being silent in-game”, the blog post read. The blog post also said that the developers have also included a warning whenever an event will happen that has missing voice acting.
Because of this, Bungie has opted to automatically enable subtitles in Destiny 2 to ensure the players will not miss any narrative content. Characters that have incomplete voiced dialogues are not specified by the post.
The SAG-AFTRA strike started on July 25, 2024, due to actors wanting tighter protection against artificial intelligence. “We’re not going to consent to a contract that allows companies to abuse A.I. to the detriment of our members”, said Fran Drescher, President of SAG-AFTRA in a blog post.
It’s currently unsure if Bungie will record new voices for the characters that are affected once the strike is done or if the characters will remain voiceless. Voice acting in games is a huge part of storytelling and not having one can make the game feel dull.
Destiny 2 was released in 2017 to favorable reviews with Metacritic giving it an average of 83 on PC. The game receives new expansions every 1-2 years with the latest one, Heresy, out now on all platforms.
