The developers communicated via blog post regarding specifically the difficulty changes a day prior to the patch update’s release. According to the blog post, players would rather quit rather than drop the game down to Easy. Some said that if the default was called “Hard” instead, they would have been more okay with dropping it down to “Normal.” This was a main reason for the difficulty name adjustments. The official blog post details the changes more in depth.
