Jagex Postpones Development of Old School RuneScape Private Servers Indefinitely

- Jagex has postponed the development of private servers in Old School RuneScape.
- The studio said that the stop in development is not related to the recent layoffs that happened.
- The development of the private server features was announced in 2024.
Jagex has postponed the development of private servers in Old School RuneScape that was announced last year. The feature is also known as Project Zanaris and will allow players to modify their servers and customize parameters to their liking.
Project Zanaris’ development was announced back in 2024. Jagex said that a different team is responsible for the development of the feature. However, it seems that the feature won’t see a release any time soon as the team responsible for Project Zanaris has been “redistributed across Jagex or directly moved to Old School.”
This statement was posted hours after layoffs were spotted by Reddit users. Jagex provided a statement to PC Gamer, saying that the layoffs and the redistribution of the Zanaris team to other parts of the studio are unrelated. The decision to stop the development of Project Zanaris had already been made before the layoffs.
Going forward, the studio is looking to focus more on improving Old School RuneScape. The statement mentioned that the members of Project Zanaris have talents and ideas that might make it to the game. Additionally, the work done in Project Zanaris isn’t seen as a waste either, with the studio mentioning that the experience earned will help with the game’s server infrastructure.
Old School RuneScape has been around since 2013. It was the original version of RuneScape before Jagex released RuneScape 3. In 2018, a mobile version of the game was released.
