Key points
  1. Elden Ring: Nightreign receives Version 1.01 patch ahead of May 30 launch.
  2. Update improves character handling, balance, music, and adds new scenarios.
  3. PC version faces critical issues including launch failure and frame rate drops on high-end systems.

Elden Ring: Nightreign has received its first patch ahead of launch, with Version 1.01 now live across all platforms. The day-one update aims to improve gameplay stability and address several pre-release balance issues, according to the official notes from publisher Bandai Namco. It also mentions that the PC version of the game is currently experiencing technical issues, from frame-rate drops on high-end computers to being completely unplayable unless certain actions are taken.

The Version 1.01 update includes improvements to character handling, balance tweaks, bug fixes, and new character scenarios. The patch also adds and adjusts music and in-game text, though exact details remain vague.

As far as PC port is concerned, the developers stated that some users may find the game won’t launch at all on PC. The issue can be resolved by verifying the integrity of game files via Steam: right-click the game in your library, select “Properties,” go to “Installed Files,” and click “Verify Integrity.”

However, even if the game boots, users with the latest graphics cards may face unexplained frame rate drops. Bandai Namco says it’s “currently investigating the cause” but has no immediate fix. Until then, players are advised to drop their settings to Medium or Low and make sure GPU drivers are up to date.

Poor PC ports have become something of a tradition for FromSoftware releases. The original Dark Souls launched on PC in a notoriously broken state, including 30FPS lock, requiring fans to create multiple mods, (most popular being DSfix) to add basic features like proper resolution and frame rate support. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice also suffered from bad frame pacing (and to this day has issues with screen tearing and no borderless windowed mode support). Elden Ring’s 2022 release was plagued by stuttering, shader compilation hitches, and inconsistent performance across high-end rigs. Later on more minor issues were introduced, such as deteriorated game performance due to ray-tracing being automatically enabled without user’s permission. Unlike other soulslike games, titles by FromSoftware are released on PC with a 60FPS lock.

Elden Ring launched in 2022 to critical acclaim and commercial success, quickly becoming one of the best-selling and most awarded games of its generation. It sold more copies than all previous Souls games combined and helped bring the soulslike genre into the mainstream, reaching over 30 million units sold by 2025. Nightreign, the studio’s first multiplayer-focused spin-off, builds on that legacy by introducing cooperative gameplay and shared progression. The game releases on PC, PS5 and Xbox S|X on May 30th, 2025.
