Key points

  1. CDPR suggests Cyberpunk 2 won’t launch before 2030, given the studio’s typical development cycle.
  2. The game recently entered preproduction with 96 developers already assigned.
  3. The sequel is built using Unreal Engine 5 and will likely feature a second city.

CD Projekt Red’s sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 is unlikely to launch before the next decade, with the studio signaling a potential 2030-2031 release. GamesRadar noticed that CDPR co-CEO Michał Nowakowski mentioned the release window during an investor presentation this week, specifying that the company’s typical development timeline — from preproduction to final release — averages four to five years. He emphasized that each project has its own variables, ultimately declining to commit to a specific year.

The game, initially codenamed Project Orion and later Cyberpunk 2, was confirmed to be in preproduction earlier this week. As of late April, 96 developers were already attached to the project, which is being led by CD Projekt Red North America. A recent job listing teased ambitions for “the most-realistic crowds ever” in the sequel, and franchise creator Mike Pondsmith recently confirmed a second city, referred to as “Chicago gone wrong,” will appear alongside a return to Night City. The upcoming sequel is being built on Unreal Engine 5.

The bulk of CDPR’s resources remains focused on The Witcher 4, which is expected to launch around 2027.

The original Cyberpunk 2077 launched in December 2020 and was widely criticized at release for game-breaking bugs and performance issues, particularly on consoles. However, following a wave of updates, next-gen ports and the successful Phantom Liberty expansion, the game rebounded commercially and reputationally, selling over 25 million copies as of 2025.
