According to data firm Amperein, in December 2024, Microsoft became the top video game publisher Microsoft games generated $465 million in December 2024despite ongoing struggles in the hardware market. About 64% of Microsoft’s consumer spending in December came from PlayStation users, primarily through Call of Duty purchases.

The report highlights that Microsoft’s position was mostly bolstered by the Call of Duty HQ ecosystem, which includes Black Ops 6, Warzone, and other titles of the franchise. In November 2024, these games collectively amassed 38 million active users. Microsoft also got strong sales from the launch of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which was released in December.

Ampere Analysis reported that EA generated $366 million in revenue during the same period, placing it second to Microsoft’s $465 million. EA’s strongest title was EA Sports FC 25, although the game underperformed compared to internal expectations.

Chinese publishers, including Tencent and NetEase, also reported strong performances, with Marvel Rivals reaching 29 million monthly active users and Path of Exile 2 generating $148 million in revenue.

Microsoft’s multiplatform strategy appears to be paying off, particularly as it moves beyond an Xbox-centric approach. However, its hardware division continues to struggle. In the U.S., PlayStation 5 sales are currently outpacing the PlayStation 4 at the same stage of its lifecycle, while the Xbox Series X|S is trailing behind the Xbox One’s sales trajectory.

Despite these challenges, Xbox head Phil Spencer has reiterated Microsoft’s commitment to gaming hardware while also embracing multiplatform releases. As seen during the recent Xbox Developer Direct, titles like Doom: The Dark Ages are set to launch on rival platforms. Furthermore, Microsoft is reportedly planning to support the Nintendo Switch 2 upon its release.
