Cookie Clicker is set for release on consoles on May 22, 2025, according to the post on Bluesky from the game’s developers, Julien “Orteil” Thiennot.
Initially released for Web browsers on August 8, 2013 the game features a clickable big cookie on the screen, which earns a single cookie per click. This cookies earned from clicks can then be used to purchase ingame assets such as buildings that automatically produce cookies, as well as upgrades which can improve the efficiency of clicks and buildings. There game also feature many other mechanics that allow users to earn cookies in a variety of different ways. Notably, the game has no conventional ending.
Cookie Clicker was written by Orteil in a single evening, and garnered 50,000 players within hours after it was posted in a link on 4chan. A month after the game’s initial release, it had over 200,000 players per day. According to Orteil the traffic had peaked at 1.5 million hits in one day during August 2013, and by January 2014, Cookie Clicker was still getting a steady 225,000 hits per day.
The game was released for Android smartphones on October 5, 2020 and for PC via Steam on September 1, 2021 where it features an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating with 74,642 reviews.
