Key points

  1. Fallout: Nuevo Mexico was expected to rework Fallout: New Vegas into the setting of Mexico City.
  2. The workload to accomplish the mod’s vision was enormous, with costs being “too great.”
  3. Modder Zapshock prioritizes his and his team’s mental health over completing passion project.

The highly anticipated Fallout: Nuevo México mod, which aimed to transform Fallout: New Vegas into a post-apocalyptic Mexico City, has been canceled. The ambitious project consisted of a small but passionate team of “less than four” – with Zapshock serving as the head developer and modder.

Fallout: Nuevo Mexico was intended to present “the harsh realities and complexities of the post-apocalyptic and real life world in a responsible way.” Planned features included recreations of Mexico City landmarks such as Chapultepec and Xochimilco, alongside a “culturally nuanced” portrayal of cartels and local communities..

However, despite the team’s passion, the scale of the project proved overwhelming. “As much as I love this project, I need to prioritize my mental health and face reality,” Zapshock shared in an announcement to the mod’s Discord community.

He elaborated: “The team is small (less than four), the workload enormous, and the costs ahead—both financial and personal—are too great.”

“I’ve met amazing people along the way, some who’ve become long-term friends and helped me grow and evolve into a better person,” wrote Zapshock. “Some of the best moments of my life have been spent bringing this world to life, and I’ll always be proud of the work we accomplished.”
